Karma points/Reputation indicate how good you are in the community and how much the community trusts you. They are earned by convincing your peers that you know what you’re talking about. They can be earned by doing various activities on forum such as answering questions, your answers getting accepted, etc.

Karma points also unlock certain privileges for you. Karma points are directly proportional to the amount of contribution you make, so keep contributing.

Note: Karma in Indian religions is the concept of "action" or "deed" (from Wikipedia).
